FAD FAD FAD.....has the fitness industry gone too far?

Are we reaching a point where enough isn't enough?

So I hope wherever you are you take a moment to truly contemplate the severity of this post. Ok you don't have to be as serious as I am, there is humor as well, but really ask yourself if your new fitbit, boutique class, or T25 dvd is doing you any justice. By the way, I do have an iwatch so bare with me. I may get slammed for posting these ideals, but in a round about way the whole creating fitness to fit the people is going to run out one day. Or we may end up with so much garbage, the people give up on fitness all together. What does a person do when they try four different methods of exercise and none of them get results? What is a person supposed to think when their "diet" works for three months and then they gain all there weight back plus some extra just for fun.

Am I saying finding your nitch and having endless possibilities of workout routines is bad? NO!! What I am saying is the quality of fitness products has declined. The market has played on consumers lack of intelligence in regards to health and wellness, and made billions. Whether it be from workout gear, to beats, to the best shaker bottle we tend to fall for the latest trend. I mean what's wrong with the shaker cup that has the metal ball? Nothing.  Its particularly my favorite!! I don't need a miniature blender in my bottle only to find it does not blend my protein!!!!! God help us all!!

What about the "lose fat by working out 15 minutes a day" fad. Put this in Google's search engine and you literally get 22 million results. By the way you can not reach your goal by ONLY doing 15 minutes of workout a day. Want to know why? Because nutrition is such a key player and you can not out exercise a bad diet. I think my warm up takes 15 minutes and yet I know people all over the globe are adopting this "quick solution" technique. All I am saying is if it seems to good to be true it probably is.

We need to seriously take our health into our own hands. It is interesting to look at how media has gone back to previous diets and trends and realized that "wow this probably was not as healthy as we thought." To many of the Biggest Loser advocates, as much as I applaud the following, some of those people went to the ER and had their persona torn to shreds.

According to the NewYork Post, "The trainers, she says, took satisfaction in bringing their charges to physical and mental collapse. “They’d get a sick pleasure out of it,” she says. “They’d say, ‘It’s because you’re fat. Look at all the fat you have on you.’ And that was our fault, so this was our punishment.” - THIS IS NOT HEALTHY NOR HOW ANY TRAINER SHOULD TALK TO THEIR CLIENTS!

Now whatever motivates you to get fit is ultimately up to you. But as a society are we moving in a direction where fitness is no longer a physiological necessity, but rather a mental sickness comprised of image and popularity. We are not longing for the truth, but for the next quick fix which in the end could kill us all. Who knows what's next, but I guarantee someone will try it if the Kardashians support it.

NOW READ CAREFULLY.......

Working out and a healthy lifestyle does NOT have to be extreme. You do NOT have to sit in front of a fire with a sleeping bag until you sweat out 50lbs of water. You do NOT have to do cross fit 5 times a week. You do NOT have to give up your sanity of wine. You do NOT have to tie your waist with a corset to look like Jessica rabbit. None of this is necessary to maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle.

What you do have to do is.......
  1. Find someone who knows what they are talking about (quiz them)
  2. Just because its on T.V. does not mean its legit, same goes for internet
  3. Start simple - Clean up your nutrition and figure out how to fit "physical movement" into your crazy life
  4. Don't Stress - This leads to impulsive decision making
  5. Just because your friend is doing it doesn't mean it works for you
