I hope all of you are finding your way in this crazy world and attempting to master the endless knowledge of how to become fit and healthy. I recently talked about health care and the need to take our lives into our own hands. We are in such a jambalaya of information, someone needs to help you figure out what to do and what not to do. Whats so funny about this, is your probably saying, "your not a doctor?" Your right I am not, but I am highly educated. Besides having my bachelors degree and multiple certifications in personal training, I continually educate myself on science. Notice I said science, and not google.com or health.net. I follow the facts and distinguish between the crap and the real stuff. Not everyone is full of that brown squishy stuff, but just understand many are out merely for profit. SO WHAT ABOUT THIS SOY THING............
So after sifting through bodybuilding.com, US National Library of Medicine, peer reviewed journals, and even those main stream articles all over the net I did not find much clear cut SCIENCE of the effects of soy. What I did deduce from all this was soy is a good option for those who may not sit well with cows milk (whey protein). After all they put it in infant formula. There is some evidence soy protein can reduce breast cancer, but the study I found was only in Asian countries. Most of the concerns people were having were in regards to isoflavones, these are basically plant structures which mimic estrogen like capabilities. Blah Blah Blah I know. The crazy thing is we are still learning about soy in general. You can not take one study and apply it to billions of people, this just does not make sense. In other research it shows isoflavones can reduce cancer risk (Barrett, 2006). So in my opinion, soy is a complete protein which has many benefits. We, scientists and researchers, are still in the process of discovering the many capabilities of all health foods.
So what am I trying to say? If you are trying to start a fit and healthy lifestyle, soy protein is a great choice. I personally use hydrolyzed whey protein, but soy is another option. The only recommendation I have is make sure you have a good quality brand. Going into Walmart or Costco and getting a good deal, does not always mean whats inside your container is truly soy protein. So invest in a brand you have researched and know is reputable. After all, you only have one body and it would behoove you to take caution with any supplement. CHEERS and have a wonderful weekend!
