HAPPY HOLIDAYS & A SEXY NEW YEARS!
Ok now on to my next point where I am completely excited to talk to you about intermittent fasting. Yes this has been around for awhile, but not many people have taken a liking to it. Why you ask? Well honestly probably because every time the word "fasting" comes up people automatically freak out and run the other way. No I am not going to tell you to go 24 hours without eating, because I wouldn't even do that. Before I explain how this works I want to tell you a little story.............
Being the Fitnez Amazon I have always had to maintain a sense of health, fit body, sanity, and above average knowledge on all things fitness! Well being that I am a woman who loves to eat cookies, drink wine, and go out in the city with the cute sparkly cocktail dress, I have always tried to find a way to balance fitness with life. Yes, I have tried the no carb diet, the no sugar diet, the high carb high protein low fat diet, the vegan diet (totally kidding....amazons eat meat lol), the don't eat after 7pm diet, and probably a lot more. What I found was although these diets made sense they just didn't sit well with me. I mean of course I am going to lose weight, but was it a healthy way of doing so? Most people cant answer this question. So as you know, i'm a research nut and thus I decided to embark on the intermittent fasting train! Wow am I happy I did!! So how do I do it you ask? Well let me tell you..........
STEP BY STEP PROCEDURE
- Pick an 8-10 hour window of when you want to be able to eat (I do 2:30pm - 10:30pm because I get really hungry at night)
- On the other 14-16 hours you will be "fasting" you will be sleeping a lot of that time, you can have coffee w/ a little creamer, tea, water, and any diet beverages (this is last resort)
- During your feeding period try to limit sugar and processed foods, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, and consume 1gram of protein per kg of body weight (divide weight by 2.2)
- To achieve desired weight loss results you should still count your calories if possible (myfitnesspal, caloriecounter ect.)
- If you feel light headed you can implement this regime every other day until your body regulates itself (if you are used to eating every 2-3 hours you may have to give your body time to adjust)
- No you do not have to eat breakfast, I DONT!!!
- If you feel uneasy at all check with your physician.
- If you are pregnant do not do this and if an athlete you may have to modify eating windows
Sounds pretty easy right? Yes you can eat pretty much whatever during your feeding period, but the healthier you eat the better the results. So the science behind it all is it generally takes 10-12 hours for your liver to deplete itself of glycogen. So you have a 2-4 hour period where your body is in fasting mode and burning all that stored fat. You begin to see results within 2-3 days!! ok so lets look at what the researchers have to say......
"Data from studies conducted in laboratory rodents found that, in part, calorie restriction increases longevity by preventing or delaying the occurrence of chronic disease
s, including diabetes, atherosclerosis, cardiomyopathy, autoimmune diseases, kidney and respiratory diseases, and cancer"
-Fontana L, Klein S. Aging, Adiposity, and Calorie
Restriction. JAMA. 2007;297(9):986-994. doi:10.1001/jama.297.9.986.
"Our results showed that intermittent fasting improved learning and memory as measured by Barnes maze and fear conditioning. Intermittent fasting also increased the thickness of CA1 pyramidal cell layer and drebrin expression in the hippocampus. These results suggest that intermittent fasting improves brain functions and structures."
- Li, Liaoliao, Zhi Wang, and
Zhiyi Zuo. "Chronic Intermittent Fasting Improves Cognitive Functions And
Brain Structures In Mice". PLoS ONE 8.6 (2013): e66069. Web.
While many studies are done on animals, researchers are working towards conducting more human trials as well. There are many studies which show an increase in cognitive function, fat loss, and increased life span. While I cant speak much on life span as I am only 27, I can say this method of eating has helped me lose body fat and feel more mentally alert and sharp. I think anyone can talk about a subject, but those who personally experience it can relay the information on a more personal level. Now remember this is only one way of intermittent fasting known as the LEAN GAINS method. Although there are other ways, I found this to be the easiest to follow because I love food and I work out 4-5 days a week. If you have any questions let me know.
P.S. I will also be doing a youtube video on what to eat when intermittent fasting and examples of how to implement this into your daily life!! www.youtube.com/c/thefitnezamazon1
